Introducing the Good Ground Urban Garden by MPUMC!

We are starting a community vegetable garden at Morgan Park United Methodist Church!

We are creating a space where different generations of community members can gather to work together.

We invite our neighbors to join us to tend, water, plant, reap, and more!  We will give all of the produce away free of charge.

COME GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY!

Let's See What A Little Love Can Do!

This plot of land to the north of the church has sat unused and unloved for decades.

It's time to use a little elbow grease and a bit of care to see what it can become, but we need your help!

LET'S PLANT THE SEED OF LOVE!

What Does "Good Ground" Mean?

The name "Good Ground" refers to the Parable of the Sower as told by Jesus in three different places in the Bible:

Matthew 13: 1- 23

Mark 4: 1-20

 Luke 8:4–15

Jesus likens seed falling on "good ground" or "good soil" to one who hears the Word and understands and applies it.

Rather than wasted seed that the thorns choked, the birds ate, or the sun scorched.

Let'sssssss GROW!🌱

EARTH DAY LAUNCH

What better time to start a new garden than on Earth Day!

Join us for a brief ground-breaking ceremony on the North Lawn.  You can visit the site where we'll plant garden, take pictures, and meet new neighbors.

Don't worry! It's not time to get your hands dirty just yet! 🧤

We will be blessing the soil and discussing ways that the community can get involved.

The Ground-Breaking Ceremony, Earth Day 2026

Our ground-breaking ceremony was an exciting, intergenerational event!

Novice and expert gardeners alike showed up.

Tilling the ground turned out to be a fool's errand. After trying 2 different machines, the soil wouldn't budge.

Undeterred, we planted sunflowers in pots and wrote down our visions for the garden.

Chicago: All 4 Seasons In 1 Day!

In the last month alone, we've had hail, rain, summer temps, and frigid nights.

Sheesh! The Windy City is so unpredictable!

Due to the ever-changing weather, we moved the sunflowers indoors unitl we were certain that the last frost had passed (*fingers crossed*)

Up Next: Planting Day!

We are inviting our neighbors of all ages to join us!

We plan to start small and grow.  We will have a few raised beds filled with soil, ready for eager hands to dig in!

We'll have bird-house painting for kids and more! Join us!
